Risk of Preterm Birth

And Labour Care Guide for Preterm Labour.

Introduction

The Risk of Preterm Birth course aims to translate standards into care. It incorporates the latest WHO recommendations and equips teams with competencies to recognise risk, confirm gestational age, and determine actions for care for women at risk of preterm birth.

This version of the course was created for WHO’s ACS-IR trial and intended to be used only in by the trail’s participating facilities.

Duration

2 days.

Facilitator-to-participant ratio

1 facilitator for every group of 6 participants.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants should demonstrate the ability to recall, identify, and execute steps for recognising risk, confirming gestational age, and providing pre-referral interventions and counselling for women at risk of preterm birth, per current WHO recommendations.

Learning materials

These materials are for use in the ACS-IR trial. A global package will be available at a later stage.

Download and preview the materials you will need. You should also have printed materials during a training. You can download the printing files free of charge to print locally. To calculate how many copies you need, keep in mind that there should be one facilitator for every group of six participants.

  • Action Plans

Posters showing the steps to take during care, to use both during training and as a job aid for clinical practice.

There are two Action Plans — one for Risk of Preterm Birth and one for Labour Care Guide for Preterm Labour.

1 set per group (facilitator + 6 participants), and enough to leave at each facility to be used in clinical care.

  • Flipchart

Paper-based facilitation tools, with guidance for facilitators to demonstrate, lead discussions and support practice.

There are two Flipcharts — one for Risk of Preterm Birth and one for Labour Care Guide for Preterm Labour.

1 set per group (facilitator + 6 participants)

  • Provider Guide

Booklets for every participant to use during the course, and afterwards to support continuous practice and quality improvement in the facility. Includes tools, resources and activities.

There are two Provider Guides — one for Risk of Preterm Birth and one for Labour Care Guide for Preterm Labour.

Can be also printed out as sheets in a normal office printer.

    1 set per participant

  • Job aids

To support learning and clinical practice. They are available in the Provider Guide but you can download the individual files here too.

  • App for low-dose high-frequency practice

An app for practicing the skills learned in the course. Available to save to any device for offline use.

Assessments

As part of the learning process, every training program includes assessments for the participants.

You will be using LIFT Assessments. Follow instructions from trainers or master trainers to log in at lift.training.

As a backup, you may download and print paper bases assessments.

Equipment

Every group of 6 of participants will need these items to practice during the training. The equipment should also be available for practice in the facilities after the training.
