Introduction

The first part of the course is intended for all team members who may care for pregnant, laboring, and post-partum women who need to diagnose rapidly at any level of the health system.

The second part builds the capacity of skilled birth attendants to provide high quality care for ongoing management of the pre-eclamptic or eclamptic woman.

Learning objectives

  • Correct assessment and classification of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
  • Administration of loading and maintenance doses of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) and anti-hypertensive medications.
  • Management of convulsions.

Duration

2 days

  • Day 1: Training for anyone involved in caring for pregnant, laboring, and post-partum women to rapidly diagnose pre-eclampsia at any healthcare level.
  • Day 2: Developing skilled birth attendants’ abilities to deliver high-quality ongoing mangament for pre-eclampsia or eclampsia cases.

Facilitator-to-participant ratio

1 facilitator for every group of 6 participants.

Participants will need these items to practice during the training. The equipment should also be available for practice in the facilities after the training.

  • Stethoscope – 1 per 2 participants
  • BP Machine – 1 per 2 participants
  • Reflex hammer – 1 per 2 participants
  • Pregnancy Wheel – 1 per 2 participants
  • Measuring tape– 1 per 2 participants
  • Calendar including 2 years – 1 per person
  • Gloves – 1 box per group
  • IV giving set – this is usually only tubing – 1 per group of six participants
  • Needles 18 or 20 gauge 2 inches – 10 per participant
  • 20cc Syringes – 4 per participant
  • Mock MgSO4 30cc empty – 1 per participant + extra
  • Lignocaine (Mock)– 1 group of 6 participants
  • Antihypertensive – 1 group of 6 participants
  • IV bags for dilution (or other local dilution source) – 1 per group of six participants
  • Alcohol swabs/cotton balls – 1 box per group of six participants
  • Melon/pumpkin/grapefruit (grapefruit easiest) – 1 per group of six participants
  • Vessel for fruit – 1 per group of six participants
  • Fetoscope – 1 per group of six participants
  • Thermometer – 1 per group of six participants
  • Urine dipsticks – 1 bottle
  • Egg for protein – 2
  • Foley catheter – 1 group of 6 participants
  • Urine collection bag – 1 group of 6 participants
  • O2 mask/tubing – 1 group of 6 participants
  • Paper towels for clean up
  • Tape for hanging Action Plans that is safe for walls
