Introduction

Essential Care for Labor & Birth (ECLB) is intended for all providers who care for women in labor. It builds the capacity of the entire team of providers to give evidence-based, respectful care.

1 facilitator for every group of 6 participants.

  • Action Plan

    A poster showing the steps to take during care, to use both during training and as a job aid for clinical practice.

    1 per group (facilitator + 6 participants), and enough to leave at each facility to be used in clinical care.

    Paper-based facilitation tool, with guidance for facilitators to demonstrate, lead discussions and support practice.

  • Provider Guide

    A booklet for every healthcare worker to use during the training and keep afterwards. For reviewing content and practicing skills overtime.

    Cards with different scenarios to practice in teams, during and after the training.

  • ECLB Blended learning module

    Jhpiego’s online course that combines individual e-learning with hands-practice and discussion.

As part of the learning process, every training program includes assessments for the participants. You can download and print the assessments.

During practice of Essential Care for Labor and Birth you will need:

  • Action Plan
  • Provider Guide
  • Pregnancy wheels or calendars
  • Pens/pencils, paper, blank partographs and/or client records
  • BP machine – 1 per 2 learners
  • Stethoscope – 1 per 2 learners
  • Thermometer
  • Birth simulator with newborn model
  • Gloves (clean and sterile)
  • Fetoscope/Doppler and ultrasound gel
  • Measuring tape
  • Soap or alcohol based hand rub
  • Videos and projector/laptop (if using)
  • Towels, baby hat, and blanket
  • Scissors or blade
  • Hemostats, clamps, ties for cord
  • Basin for placenta
  • Personal protection for provider
  • Mock oxytocin, misoprostol, syringes and needles
  • Suction device for baby
  • Ventilation bag and mask for baby
  • Clock/watch
  • Container for safe sharps disposal
  • Gauze

If you are attending an online training you will also need:
